Best of 2023
While 2023 featured some excellent new crime dramas from Europe, the most popular shows were new seasons of established favorites.
For the new content, these were what I found to be most notable.
The Long Shadow. This drama is based on the experience of the police and victim families during one of the most expensive manhunts in British history — the seven-year search for the Yorkshire Ripper. (ITVx)
The Woman in the Wall. Called a “gothic drama,” this show is based on the experiences of young Irish women who were sent by parents or the church to mother and baby homes that were often attached to the facilities that ran on the girls’ indentured servitude. (BBC)
SAMBRE. Inspired by true events, this French drama tells the story of a serial rapist who assaulted nearly dozens of women between the 1980s and 2010s in a rural area of northern France. It’s told within different time periods through the eyes of victim, judge, mayor, scientists, police, and the rapist. It lays bare the poice mistakes, who could not believe that someone they all knew could be responsible. (France2)
